Asbestos can be found in almost any building material, its use was widespread from the 1950’s through to the mid 1980’s. The following link gives a useful schematic view of the possible locations of asbestos in buildings. It is by no means an exhaustive list but it does give a good background to the typical locations it may be found:

Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) can take on many different forms; the following photos should help to give some idea of their appearance. It is important to note that this list is not exhaustive and if you are in any doubt seek specialist advice.
